AFCON 2015 decision expected on Monday

The Confederation of African Football will make its decision regarding the hosting of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament known on Monday. Morocco, which was selected to host the tournament, has requested it be postponed due to the risk of the spread of the Ebola virus affecting western Africa. The competition is due to run from January 17 to February 8.

According to the Algeria Press Service, the executive committee of the CAF met on Sunday with the federation's president, Isa Hayatou, Algerian Football Federation chief Mohamed Rauraua and Egyptian CAF delegate Hani Abourida presiding. Other members of the CAF were also due in Rabat to meet with the Moroccan authorities.

The Moroccan Ministry of Sport had asked for the tournament to be postponed to an unspecified date on the recommendation of the national Health Ministry and the World Health Organization (WHO), which has in turn stressed the importance of "avoiding gatherings where people from Ebola-affected countries might participate."

According to WHO data, over 8,400 people have been infected with Ebola since March, with more than 4,000 confirmed fatalities. The worst-affected countries are Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Morocco is also due to host the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup in Rabat and Marrakesh between December 10 and 20. As things stand, there is no suggestion that the tournament will be cancelled, postponed or moved.
