Good news for Sergio Asenjo, the Villarreal goalkeeper was given a clean bill of health by doctors after suffering a nasty fall in yesterday’s meeting with Espanyol. “It was a shock, nothing more,” he explained. “Now I’ll rest for a couple of days and that’s that”.
The fall: “I can’t really remember how it happened. The doctors asked me about it and later, I was a bit shocked when I saw the TV images of it. I just thought I’d taken a blow to the head and not twisted my neck”.
Lucky escape: “It could have been a lot worse; the medical staff told me that I have been very lucky”.
Continuing playing: “The rush of adrenaline forces you to continue but once I got back to the dressing room I began to feel dizzy and that’s why they ran tests – more as a precaution than anything else. I was left a bit groggy by the fall but I felt ok to play. At no point did I lose consciousness, I just felt a bit dizzy back in the changing room”.
This week’s training schedule: “I’ll be taking this week a little more relaxed than usual. Right now, I feel fine but seeing as the league’s on hold, I’ll take my time to recover well”.
Family concerns: “Yes my family was very worried – at least until I was able to talk to them and reassure them that I was all right. I can understand that it must have been a huge shock for them, the TV images are quite frightening”.
Last gasp goal: “We have to show more concentration in the final minutes of our matches because the team had done everything to win the game. We gave a good account against a side who continually ploughed balls into our box. We don’t want to slip out of the European qualifying places – our objective is to continue in Europe next year. The future looks bright and there is total belief in this group of players”.
