A 'night of hunting' after the Barcelona-PSG match

Two Paris Saint-Germain supporters ended up in hospital after they were attacked with a knife by unknown assailants near the Camp Nou following the Champions League match on Wednesday. One of them is in hospital with a lung injury, while the other has already been discharged. The Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalonia’s police force) are investigating both attacks separately and believe that the first attack was the work of “radical and violent followers of Barcelona”, while the second could be the consequence of a violent robbery.

The most serious incident occurred around midnight on the street Felipe de Paz, which is very close to the Camp Nou, and it’s where two PSG fans were attacked from behind by hooded assailants. One of the victims was, as intendant of the Mossos Xavier Porcuna explained to this newspaper, “clearly identified as a follower of PSG as he was wearing a shirt of this team”. He was the one who suffered the worst of it. His companion Guillaume, who beaten but not stabbed, explained the attack on RAC 1: “They came from behind with incredible violence, they attacked us and they stabbed without anything further. There was no discussion. I think that they shouted ‘Visca el Barça’ and they seemed Spanish. I took a few knocks and after recovering myself I saw my friend with blood on his shirt.” Guillaume lives in Gavà and has worked in Cataluña for many years.

Second attack. Half an hour later, the second attack took place on the Avenida de Madrid. In this case, the victims have already been discharged and are now back in France. If in the first case the Mossos suspect the Barça ultras of looking for something, in this second case they are considering the possibility that the attack was a robbery with violence.

Porcuna explained that there “had been 300 Mossos deployed in and around the Stadium even though it was not a high-risk match and that the French police did not report the presence of PSG ultras in Barcelona and had dismissed [the suggestion] that it was retaliation for previous fights”.
