The Argentine youngster Ángel Correa is already an Atlético Madrid player after the signing of an agreement between the Spanish champions and San Lorenzo de Almagro. Officials from both clubs met in Buenos Aires on Wednesday to finalise the transfer of the midfielder for 5.6m euros, 90% of the player’s value. Correa will play on loan at Rayo Vallecano from January, although Atlético have not yet made that deal official.
“There is nothing to highlight. The initial agreement remains and the only thing is that payments are deferred. Atlético officials were in Buenos Aires on December 10 to sign the papers and it was agreed that the first payment will be made in January. We will receive 5.6m euros in total,” said Matías Lammens, San Lorenzo’s president, to the media. The Argentine club wanted to finalise the matter before travelling to Morocco for the Club World Cup, which will take place between December 10 and December 20.
Correa has had no luck since arriving in Spain, as he was diagnosed with a benign tumour in the ventricle of his heart and had to undergo surgery on June 17 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. As a result, his transfer was not completed until he was 100% recovered. Having received medical clearance, Correa is officially an Atlético player, although he will play on loan at Rayo Vallecano until the end of the season.
Additionally, he has been called up for Argentina’s squad for the forthcoming U-20 South American Championship in Uruguay, which takes place in late January and early February. As such, La Liga will have to wait to see him make his debut in Spain.
