...and football which never lets us down

I was humbled to share a stage last night with Pellegrini and Puyol. It looked like a set-up given the earlier Champions League draw between Barça and City. The conversation focused on the mutual admiration on the successes achieved by Spanish sportswomen during the year. The video about the speed of Carolina Marín’s sport, badminton left them a gasp along with Ángela Salvadores' 40 points in the final against the US in the 2014 Women’s FIBA Championship. They were impressed with the art of the rhythmic gymnasts and of course the legend that is Mireia Belmonte, a natural who oozes charm with every gesture.

Of course we talked about football too. Tebas and Cardenal arrived apparently concerned about a proposed minutes silence at Riazor, which was annulled by a clear goal scoring chance for Depor. Cerezo joked with Alejandro Blanco, a Madrid fan about the current Club World Cup looking for collusion from Puyol. He was absolutely fantastic, keen to greet the table of Madrid and Atlético veteran players and winning over myself and Pellegrini with a fantastic speech about his origins as a player. One summer the club tried to send him out to Málaga, where they didn’t even want him, he ended up back at Barça where Van Gaal gave him a run-out.

It really was a great night. Football is back today and it never fails. Real Madrid take part looking to secure an honour they’ve never won, although they did win the precursor, the Intercontinental. This Club World Cup has started strangely with the deluge in Rabat and subsequent move to Marrakesh on a pitch that is expected to stage five games in five days. Despite all this, the winner will be officially crowned as best team in the world. Madrid go into the tournament in great shape. In the year that we celebrate the sportswomen. Madrid are always there.
