Rabat welcomed Real Madrid yesterday evening with heavy rain and disappointment following the cancellation of the semi-final match against Cruz Azul in the city. “The business of football doesn’t care about the happiness of the people. Today FIFA have destroyed everything”, complained one local fan desperate to get an autograph. The 40 or so personal security guards outside the teams’ hotel ensured that no-one managed to get the desired signature from any of their idols.
The assembled numbers to meet the delegation was less than anticipated as many locals were of the opinion that the Madrid squad would amend plans and fly straight to Marrakesh following the FIFA decision. Many of the players shared this uncertainty as they too were unsure of their final destination following the decision to move the game.
Irrespective of the destination, the squad requested that they fly with their talisman airline and pilot, Iberia’s, Juan Manuel Bonet. He flew the team to for the 0-4 semi final win in last season’s Champions League against Bayern Munich. He then piloted the team to Lisbon and Cardiff. The Madrid squad were accompanied by Moroccan producer Red One (Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj etc. ), he also produced the club’s anthem to celebrate the tenth European triumph as well as producing the official Club World Cup anthem.
