It was a marvelous night, organized as a tribute to 2014, the year of Spanish sportswomen. We rounded up the usual group to pay tribute, not just the prize-winners but also to the likes of Ona Carbonell, Sara Sorribes, members from the Spanish Women’s football team who all showed up with their laudable sporting spirit. We were delighted with the reaction as the idea behind this year’s ceremony was to pay tribute to the tremendous leap forward that female sport has experienced this year. Watching the videos that were screened before the event, one couldn’t help but be blown away. It was tremendous.
It’s difficult to gauge the summit in sport. It’s not easy in maintaining the balance between living day to day with the rigors of training, the physical pain the body goes through, pushing oneself to the limit. On top of this, one has to add, the nerves of competing, overcoming sensations, the psychological aspect of winning and its impact on rivals and in standard day-to-day living. I’m not sure if it’s even harder for sportswomen in Spain, We are still behind in certain areas, as things started at a different time period for us.
One of these areas was sport, traditionally considered as something superfluous. Since the celebration of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, sport has taken on a new dimension in Spanish society, it’s seen as a sign of being contemporary and this is tangible. The moves forward however, generally focused on sportsmen rather than sportswomen, a clear indication that society was moving forward albeit with plenty of room to improve. Fast forward to 2014, and we are now in a position to celebrate. We can now confidently say that we’ve caught up with ourselves. Spanish sportswomen are winning competitions regularly and their is young talent coming through constantly as we saw in the case with Ona Carbonell taking the mantle from Gemma Mengual.
