Cristiano Ronaldo: 14 goals in 17 Madrid derbies

Cristiano is the protagonist in the derbies. And even more so in those that take place at the Calderón. The Portuguese colossus has scored 14 goals in 17 derbies (0.82 goals per game) and more than half, eight, were scored at Atlético’s ground.

In fact, Real Madrid’s No.7 has scored at least twice in three derbies and that occured on two occasions by the Manzanares. His only hat-trick against Atlético was scored on 11 April 2012, when Real Madrid triumphed 4-1 at the Calderón.

He set Madrid on their way with a free-kick from 35 yards out that surprised goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and he restored his side’s lead in the 68th minute with a missile from outside the box that made it 2-1. He celebrated the goal by raising his shorts and showing his right thigh. He finished the job by again beating the Belgian goalkeeper, this time round with a penalty.

The last brace the Madrid star scored at the Calderón was during last season’s Copa del Rey campaign, when Carlo Ancelotti’s men travelled to the home of their rivals on February 11. In that match Ronaldo twice beat Aranzubia from the penalty spot.

To those goals Cristiano can add the symbolic one he netted in the final of the Champions League in Lisbon on May 2014. Cristiano put the final seal on the Décima in the 120th minute with a penalty kick to make it 4-1.

Of the fourteen goals he has scored against Atlético, five have come from open play (four with his right foot and one with his head), two from free-kicks and seven from the penalty spot.

Cristiano will play his first match in this season’s Copa del Rey this evening (he was rested against Cornellà) and he will take part in his 18th Madrid derby.
