Josep Maria Bartomeu is keen to fill the vacant Director of Sport role before what will be the most tense board meeting of his mandate. The Barcelona President is keen to announce Andoni Zubizarreta’s successor at some point later today. At the moment, the big favourite is Jordi Roura, who deputised as first team coach during Tito Vilanova’s convalescence and who, together with Aureli Altimira, is in charge of the club’s youth base.
After consulting Roura’s close friend Carles Rexach, the man who chose Roura as his assistant during his season in charge of J-League outfit Yokohama Flügels, Barça have cited the 47-year-old as the obvious choice to take up Zubizarreta’s old post. In his favour, Roura is someone who knows the club inside out and more importantly, the youth academy – which the Catalans will be dependant on until the FIFA transfer ban is lifted.
It was on the express wishes of Pep Guardiola that Roura was brought on board as an analyst; he was later named as Tito Vilanova’s assistant when Guardiola left to take the Bayern Munich job.
Other candidates include Eduardo Macià, an experienced professional who has worked with a number of clubs such as Valencia, Olympiacos and Liverpool. He is currently employed at Fiorentina as a scout. Another possibility was Sevilla’s Monchi although it appears that he is not up for joining the Catalans right at this point. A fourth option, Raúl Sanllehí has already been ruled out by club directors.
