"Luis Enrique’s future doesn’t depend on me" - Escribá

Elche coach Fran Escribá says the onus is on FC Barcelona to get through their Copa del Rey tie and progress to the quarter finals although he admitted that his side will be taking the game seriously when they meet at Camp Nou tomorrow night and have the intention “of getting a draw at the very least”.

In today’s press conference, Escribá was asked to give his thoughts on the troubled situation at Barcelona and the uncertainty of Luis Enrique’s position at the club. “His future doesn’t depend on me – just like my future doesn’t depend on him,” the Elche coach said. “I think a lot of what has been written about what is going on behind the scenes at Barça doesn’t correspond to the reality”.

With his team rock bottom in the league table and going into Thursday’s tie without injured goalkeeper Manu Herrera and defender José Ángel Alonso, Escribá has problems of his own. “With the squad I have, there is no fixed set of first choice players; I just have to field the most competitive side I can,” he continued. The coach added that he doesn’t fear for his own future at Elche. “I’m not the kind of person to abandon ship. There are 21 games left to play and that gives us some margin of survival. I won’t be resigning because I don’t think the problem we have at this point is me”.
