Barcelona have made public the sale of their television rights to Telefónica, Spain’s biggest telephone company, which has been aggressively entering media markets. The Catalan club has broken its relationship with Mediapro after eight seasons and will be tied to Telefónica for one year in return for 140 million euros, the same as the club received this year. Additionally Teléfonica will take over the running of the club’s TV channel, Barça TV.
Upon hearing of the deal, Jaume Roures, Mediapro president commented sarcastically: “Barça chose the third biggest telephone operator in the world over four catalanitos (little Catalans)". Mediapro is a Barcelona based multimedia communications group.
Most of the clubs in the Liga have deals with Mediapro, but some have already moved to Telefónica, such as Celta and Real Sociedad. Real Madrid are with Mediapro for the 2014/15 season.
The new TV rights contract for Barcelona is for one year, the maximum agreed, because as of 2016 the television rights should be centralised. Some clubs however have signed longer contracts, based on this agreement not being carried out.
