German Franz Beckenbauer and Argentinean César Luis Menotti, two historical legends of the game of football, spoke out to defend Cristiano in the wake of criticism over his 30th birthday party, which took place just hours after Real Madrid were thumped 4-0 by city rivals Atlético.
“I’m not bothered whether (Joan Manuel) Serrat [a famous Spanish singer] takes himself off to bed early or if (Gabriel) García Márquez has a whisky. They have every right to do what they want to do”, said Menotti, World Cup winner with Argentina in 1978, in his column for DPA Global Media Services.
Beckenbauer, also writing in his DPA column, said that the striker had no way of knowing beforehand that his team would lose 4-0.
Cristiano has been criticised for going ahead with the party in the wake of the defeat, and for being seen singing and dancing at the event in the photos and videos posted on social networks by guests at the party.
