Moyes steers Real Sociedad to elusive away win

Real Sociedad finally broke their hoodoo away from Anoeta with a 1-0 victory at Getafe on Monday night. The Basque team went into the game having last won away from home on April 26 2014 – a 1-0 win at Real Betis in Week 35 of last season. It’s one of two firsts for David Moyes who took over from Jagoba Arrasate in November – his team have also managed consecutive victories for the first time this season to move up to tenth in the table, level on points with Espanyol.

A patchy first half ended without goals at the Coliseum with keeper Gero Rulli pulling out three decisive saves for the visitors. Moyes will be only too aware that the only goal came from a set-piece and not from open play but what mattered tonight was taking all three points, not the method in which they were gained. Iñigo Martínez rose to guide in a header from Esteban Granero’s delivery on 66 minutes and that was enough for Real Sociedad to finally bring their curse away from home to an end.

Moyes said afterwards: “It’s been a long time without winning away from home although we did have the chance to do it earlier against Granada and Levante. We really didn’t want to see headlines saying that we’d gone for a year without an away win. We’re improving and we’re getting stronger”.
