Real Madrid and Las Palmas say last goodbye to Betancort

Real Madrid and UC Las Palmas said one last goodbye to former goalkeeper Antonio Betancort who starred for both clubs during the 1960s. Betancort passed away on Sunday after a lengthy illness. He was 78.

Representing Real Madrid in Las Palmas for the funeral service was Director of Institutional Relations Emilio Butragueño and the goalkeepr’s ex-team mate Amancio Amaro. “It’s a sad day because this is a great loss for madridísmo,” said Butragueño. “He will always remain in this history of this club for his contribution to the successful spell the team enjoyed and for his great professionalism. It’s because of players like Antonio Betancort that Real Madrid boast such an impressive honours’ list. That is why we have to shown our gratitude to him and recognize what he did for our club”.

Butragueño told reporters that he collected football stickers of Betancort when he was a boy and that all of the veteran players spoke a lot about him. “They tell me he was a very discreet, relaxed man and a great team mate who always carried Real Madrid in his heart, as I discovered for myself after talking to his family today”.
