"I’m not Madrid’s saviour; in football there are no saviours"

Luka Modric will return to the starting XI against Levante today, four months and one week after his last appearance in Real Madrid’s starting line-up against Rayo. Ancelotti and the team have been waiting for the Croatian’s return but the player played down his influence in the team in an interview with 'Sportske Novosti' newspaper. “When I made my comeback and I was warming up on the touchline, the fans really started to give me encouragement and that helped me a lot. I was quite surprised to be honest; I didn’t expect it. But I don’t want to be seen as some kind of saviour – in football there are no saviours,” he said.

Madrid have suffered two defeats and one draw in their last three outings. Modric admits that the team are not in their best moment of form but sent a positive message out to fans: “This isn’t the true Real Madrid but I am sure that we will see the real Madrid very soon”.

He also gave his backing to coach Carlo Ancelotti, saying, “The players talk a lot amongst ourselves and we know that Ancelotti has enough experience to turn this around. Bale? The whole team is suffering right now, not just Bale. The game against Levante is not going to be easy but we need a win to boost morale ahead of the Clásico. The only way we can get out of this is by being a team”.
