Cristiano Ronaldo scored once again in the league yesterday evening, bringing his total goal tally to 39 in 32 games. He did, however, also miss a penalty, striking Carlos Kameni’s right-hand post in the 65th minute. To see the Portuguese forward fail to convert a spot kick has been a rare occurrence since he arrived in Madrid. He’s missed just six of fifty-six, a 91% conversion rate.
He’s missed two this season, against Malaga and against Ludogorets in the Champions League, the most he’s missed in a single season since joining from Manchester United in 2009. Prior to last night, he hadn’t missed a spot kick in a league game for two years. Curiously enough that was also against Malaga, though he faced Willy Caballero that day instead of Kameni. Of his 39 league goals so far this season, 9 have been from the spot.
Cristiano’s statistics are almost always compared to those of Leo Messi. His record from the spot is also good, but not quite as good. The Argentine has taken 61 penalties in a Barça shirt, missing 3: a 79% conversion rate.
