Real Madrid have lost four out of the twenty-four games they’ve played without Luka Modric this season. The team won 18 of the other fixtures (a win ratio of one in three) while waiting for the Croatian to recover from the injury he suffered on international duty.
With Modric in the team, Madrid have lost three league games: against Valencia at Mestalla, against Atleti at the Calderon and against Athletic at San Mamés. They also lost in the Cup against their city rivals, a result which ultimately knocked them out. While the team’s win ratio when the midfielder plays is relatively similar to that when he doesn’t, Madrid clearly feel his absence.
With Modric out of the picture, Asier Illaramendi is the player most likely to step in. The midfielder, who hails from Mutriku, has played 1,407 minutes this season in thirty-four games. Meanwhile, Sami Khedira has played 623 minutes in seventeen games and Lucas Silva 401 minutes in eight games. None of them has scored or provided an assist. Modric, in contrast, has scored once and provided five assists.
