Danilo set to become the 23rd Brazilian to play for Madrid

After the recent debut of Lucas Silva (who was presented on January 26) in the shirt of Real Madrid against Deportivo at the Bernabéu, Danilo is set to be the next Brazilian to play for Madrid. He will be the 23rd Brazilian to pull on the famous shirt (a figure excluding Pepe, who was born in Maceió but is Portuguese). The first of these was Fernando Giudicelli, a midfielder, but he only played in one league match: on December 15, 1935 against Racing (2-4), a few weeks from his 35th birthday and a match which saw he was nearing the end of playing professional football.

It was not until the late 50s when the arrival of Didi and Canario came about. The first player lasted a year at Madrid, and the second stayed for three, but he was not a success. Moreover, Didi walked out of the back door despite being considered one of the great players of his era.

Following the departure of Evaristo in 1965, there would be a wait of 26 years for an avalanche of Brazilian players at the club in the early 90s. From then until now, 17 Brazilians have featured in the first team. The stand-out player above everyone else is Roberto Carlos, with 527 games under his belt. He is the foreign player with most appearances for Real Madrid. Ronaldo Nazario played 180 games and scored 104 goals. There are more players from Brazil who arrived in Madrid but never played an official match for the first team. Players such as Luiz Fernando, Rodrigo or César Prates. The latest is Willian José, who arrived at Castilla and made his debut for the first team against Celtic in May 2014, replacing Casemiro, who has played 22 minutes in La Liga.
