Martino: "It hurts Messi too much to put his boots on"

Leo Messi did not play against Ecuador. The Barcelona player has an injury to his right foot that has caused some inflammation. The injury in question stems from a knock the forward suffered in the Barça-Manchester City match and because of the discomfort felt by the Barça man he also at out of Argentina’s match against El Salvador in Washington (2-2).

Tata Martino, the Argentina coach, spoke about the star after the match: “We gave Messi until the last minute but he was unable to play, it hurts too much to put his boots on. I offer apologies to the people who came, eager to see him,” said the former Barcelona coach.

Messi failed to get on to the pitch in either of Argentina’s matches during this international break.

The forward, along with fellow countryman Javier Mascherano, returns to Barcelona today and is scheduled to have tests carried out on his foot. He will be a doubt this weekend when Luis Enrique’s men face Celta Vigo.
