With the 0-0 against Real Madrid at the Vicente Calderón on Tuesday night , Diego Simeone equalled Pep Guardiola’s run of matches without defeat against Madrid. In total there were seven. Furthermore, within those seven games both managed four wins and three draws.
The good run of results for Atleti started in the Spanish Super Cup with a 1-0 victory at the Calderón thanks to a Mario Mandzukic goal inside the first minute. A 1-1 draw followed at the Bernabéu with goals from James and Raúl García.
The season the sides also met in the Copa del Rey. In the first leg at the Caldéron a Raúl García penalty and a goal from Giménez gave Cholo’s men a 2-0 victory and in the return match Fernando Torres scored twice in a 2-2 draw. Sergio Ramos and Cristiano scored for Madrid.
The two Liga matches also ended in favour of Simeone’s men. Tiago and Arda Turan scored in a 2-1 victory at the Bernabéu, with Cristiano scoring the consolation goal for the hosts, while a 4-0 thrashing at the Calderón came thanks to goals from Tiago, Saúl, Griezmann and Mandzukic.
The clashes between Guardiola’s Barcelona and Mourinho’s Madrid.
Barcelona’s good streak against Madrid with Guardiola at the helm started on April 27 2011 in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Champions League. A brace of goals from Lionel Messi gave the Catalans a 2-0 win at the Bernabéu.
A week later, on May 3, 2011, Barcelona secured their progression to the final thanks to a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou. Pedro scored for Barça and Marcelo replied for Madrid.
On August 14 of the same year the sides met in the Spanish Super Cup. The first leg, at the Bernabéu, ended 2-2 thanks to goals from Benzema and Xabi Alonso for Madrid and Villa and Messi for Barça. In the return leg, on August 17, Barça won 3-2 thanks to a brace from Messi and one from Iniesta. Ramos and Benzema replied for Madrid.
Next came the league match in round 16 of the 2011-12 season, on December 10, when Guardiola’s side won 3-1 in Madrid thanks to goals from Alexis Sanchez, Xavi and Cesc Fabregas. Benzema scored for the hosts.
Madrid and Barcelona also crossed paths in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey that same season. The first leg was at the Bernabéu on January 18, 2012 and ended in a 2-1 win for the Catalans thanks to goals from Puyol and Abidal. Cristiano replied for Mourinho’s men.
Finally, on January 25 2012 in the second leg of the cup game at the Camp Nou, Barça secured a 2-2 draw to see them progress thanks to goals from Pedro and Alves. Cristiano and Benzema scored for Madrid but the goals were not enough to avoid a cup exit.
Barça’s unbeaten run against Madrid ended up on April 21, 2012, when Madrid won 2-1 at the Camp Nou thanks to goals from Khedira and Cristiano, which ruled out a strike from Alexis.
On Wednesday, April 22 Simeone has the chance to surpass Guardiola’s record. A score draw or a victory would be enough to see Atleti through to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
