"I don’t know how long Cristiano will stick it out"

Ángel Di María took no time in replying to Florentino Pérez, the Argentinean spoke with Rádio América about the Real Madrid President’s comments during a press conference yesterday. “I saw the declarations. To earn what Cristiano earns, you need to have won the Balon d’Or,” the player said. “I never said that I wanted to leave Real Madrid, I never wanted to”. Di María argued that it was the club that was circulating rumours that he wanted out. “During the World Cup finals, the only thing on my mind was playing with Argentina. I don’t know where the Spanish press got their information but whatever they want to print, 75 million euros will come in handy for Madrid’s economy; they will recover much of what they spent”.

When asked whether he would have stayed on at Madrid, Di María replied, “I wasn’t told anything and nor was my agent which make us think that Madrid wanted to sell me”. Di María’s version of events was corroborated by his representative, Eugenio López en La COPE radio: “Before the World Cup there was no offer from Real Madrid. We never asked for eight million euros – for less than that Ángel would have stayed at Madrid. The difference during negotiations was one million”.

Di María also spoke of the support he received from Cristiano Ronaldo: “He was always by my side. I don’t know how long he will stick it out at Madrid” and Carlo Ancelotti: “He stood up for me when everyone else was crucifying me and I am very thankful to him for that. He fielded me in a different position when they signed Bale, I’ve got nothing against him, we have a good relationship”.

He also revealed that he received a letter from the club ordering him not to play in the World Cup final. “A letter arrived at 11 o’clock. I was undergoing treatment to try to get fit to play the final although I knew that I had a 90 per cent chance of suffering an injury. I tore that letter up. I didn’t speak to anyone at the club about it, I didn’t care. It was Sabella who had the last word and made the right decision”.
