Luis Suárez, excluded from the Ballon d'Or nominations

It is the only major absence from the list of the 2014 Ballon d’Or but it is certainly striking. Luis Suárez, the Golden Boot winner (shared with Cristiano Ronaldo) last season, wearing the shirt of Liverpool, has not been named among the 23 candidates to win the annual award of best player on the planet. The decision is clearly the result of the Uruguayan’s bite on Italy’s Chiellini during the World Cup.

And for Suárez it seems impossible to escape from the shadows of his actions. Just when the punishment had come to an end and after his Barcelona debut at the Santiago Bernabéu left a good impression, the most prestigious award in the world (in which FIFA has participated since 2010) offers another blow to the Barça striker, who undoubtedly on sporting merit (31 goals and 21 assists) should be on a list that included him in 2013.

Although the rules of the award state that the sportsmanship of players is taking into consideration, it is inevitable that some debate over whether it is the right decision to exclude him will come from it.
