San Lorenzo celebrated their win against Auckland City as if it were the Copa Libertadores. Matos’ extra-time goal guaranteed that the Argentine team will pocket a prize of at least 4m euros for reaching the final of the Club World Cup. The winner of Saturday’s match will take home 5m euros. Accordingly, the Pope’s club have already covered 40% of their budget (10m euros). On the other hand, if Real Madrid win, the prize of 5m euros would account for just 0.92% of the Bernabéu giants' annual budget.
The European champions have a budget of 541m euros. During the International Champions Cup in the USA in the summer, for example, they took 1m euros per friendly (if they had won the tournament they would have earned the same amount that they could claim if they win the Club World Cup).
The highest-earning San Lorenzo player is paid around half a million dollars (350,000 euros). Hence why players who were important in helping secure the Libertadores, such as Correa (now at Atlético), Gentiletti (Lazio) and Piatti (Montreal), left the club. There is no money. The proof of this tight budget was evident in their training session yesterday afternoon. Two young Moroccan footballers joined the session due to the absences of several players.
San Lorenzo have already fulfilled their objective, ensuring themselves the economic prize. The importance of the prize was even greater for Auckland City who, having been knocked out at the semi-final stage, were awarded 2.5m euros (equivalent to 312% of their budget), the same amount that was paid to Cruz Azul.
