Spain’s oldest football club celebrates its 125th anniversary

Football was introduced to Spain via British employees of the Rio Tinto mines in the north of the province of Huelva. Two doctors, Mackay and Ross founded Huelva Recreation Club in 1889 as an outlet for their employees to enjoy physical exercise. Today a “Peña Mackay” supporter’s club banner can still be spotted at the Nuevo Colombino stadium as a tribute the founders of the club.

Despite the celebrations that the club will enjoy to observe to commemorate the anniversary, all is not well for “El Decano”. The club are involved in a prolonged debt negotiation with the inland-revenue to try and implement a repayment scheme. Speculation has grown in recent weeks surrounding the future of the club if a settlement isn’t reached by the involved parties. On the field, Recre have gone from potential promotion candidates to a precarious league placing which sees the Andalusian side just three points above the relegation zone.
