Real Madrid beat San Lorenzo in the final of the Club World Cup last night to take home their fourth trophy of 2014 (after the Copa del Rey, the Champions League and the European Supercup). A record-breaking year without doubt. In the semi-final against Cruz Azul, Carlo Ancelotti’s team set the record for the most wins and most goals ever scored by a Spanish side in a single year, a record held until yesterday by the 2012 Barcelona side (49 wins, 175 goals).
Madrid broke both records in the victory over Cruz Azul, their 50th win of the year during which they took their goals tally to 176. Following last night’s final, their record now stands at 51 victories (5 draws and 7 defeats) and 178 goals (only 39 goals against) in 63 competitive games. They averaged 2.83 goals a game and conceded an average of just 0.62. They won’t play again until 2015.
The team’s goal scoring statistics over 2014 haven’t varied excessively from competition to competition. In the league the team have averaged 3.05 goals per game (110 goals in 35 games), 2.85 per game in the Champions League (37 goals in 13 games) and 2.4 goals per game in the Copa (22 in 9). In addition, the team scored 6 at the Club World Championship, 2 in the European Supercup and 1 in the Spanish Supercup.
The winning streak goes on
There is another record in Madrid’s sights that the team should continue to work towards in the New Year. With the win over San Lorenzo, the team’s winning streak now stands at 22. They’re just 2 behind Coritiba’s record of 24, which stands as a Guinness World Record for consecutive victories.
Madrid’s next official matches will take place in 2015, though they will visit Dubai for a friendly match against Milan on 30th December. They’ll open the year in the league against Valencia (4th January) and in the Cup against Atleti (7th January). If they win both games, they’ll have a chance to break Coritiba’s record at home in the Santiago Bernabeu against Espanyol.
