Marcelo's injury is not serious and he could play in Valencia

Marcelo’s injury was the only sour point of Madrid’s Club World Cup final victory over San Lorenzo on Saturday night. The Brazilian was forced off with a thigh injury just two minutes before half-time and is awaiting the results of scans that should take between 48 and 72 hours to return. Still, the first scans revealed that the injury was not serious and the club is confident that he will be fine to play in the next competitive match, on January 4 at the Mestalla against Valencia.

The full-back is optimistic and hopes to fully recover during the winter break. The doctors are also confident but they want to see how the injury develops and look over the results of the scans.

Marcelo had been one of the few Madrid players who had not suffered an injury this season. Furthermore, Ancelotti regards him as one of the first names down on the team-sheet (he was only a substitute in six games). For the Italian coach it seems crucial to have him back after the Christmas break because Madrid will stake its claim for the league and Copa del Rey in what is set to be a tough January. “Since the World Cup he has been the best full-back in the world,” Ancelotti said. Such is his importance, he is fourth on the list of players who have featured most this season with 1,981 minutes. Only Cristiano (2,131), Kroos (2,126) and Casillas (2,070) exceed him.
