A guard of honour for Madrid in a hostile Mestalla

Valencia, logically, have not changed their mind and will make a guard of honour for Madrid to mark their victory in the Club World Cup. This gesture of respect has generated debate at Los Che. After all, Madrid are one of the biggest rivals for Valencia fans. From the Mestalla the club has justified its decision. Nuno did the same in his pre-match press conference. “To be great you have to recognise the merits of others,” he said. “We are a club that respects the success of our rivals and hopefully one day we will have that ourselves.” Rofete, the club’s general manager, shares the same opinion.

Nevertheless, the guard of honour continues to generate controversy and was the hot topic on the eve of the match. Fans in the North Stand, the area with most atmosphere inside the Mestalla, have been promoting the idea of singing “I’m from Valencia” in unison around the stadium while the guard of honour is taking place.

The Mestalla lives football and the atmosphere is set to be enormous. The tickets have been sold out since Monday and the club has also organised a ‘tifo’ that will be spread across two sides of the stadium in front of the grandstand. Valencia have also increased security to ensure things do not spill over inside the stadium. (605 tickets have been distributed to fans of Madrid). Accredited media from Algeria, Japan, the USA, Argentina, Portugal, France, Germany and Italy will be amongst those covering the contest.

Video. Valencia have also encouraged their fans with a video that circulated across social media platforms with the slogan “Yes we can”. In the video, with Negredo as its talisman, it shows some of the goals Valencia have scored against Madrid at the Mestalla. They have not beat Madrid on home soil since 2009.
