The Mestalla has historically been a tough place to visit for Madrid. However, in recent years they have had the measure of their trips to face Los Che. In fact, their last five visits in the league and resulted in victories and 21 goals scored (and average of 4.2) with only nine conceded.
Despite the current winning run of Madrid on Valencia’s home turf, the balance remains in the favour of Los Che: 33 home wins, 21 draws and 25 away wins.
The last league visits to the Mestalla for Madrid have not only brought with them victories for the visitors, but they have brought with them lasting images in the league campaigns: Pepe’s cruciate ligament injury in 2009-10, the celebration of Mourinho with Callejón, the goal of Cristiano in the 1-3 victory and the ‘pineapple’ celebration the whole team did last season after Jese’s goal.
The 6-3 victory for Madrid in 2010-11 is also remembered, with a double from Kaká, which was one of only a few great performances by the Brazilian during his time at the club.
