At 13:15, more than 40,000 took their place inside the Calderón and chanted the name of Fernando Torres. El Niño left the dressing room with his red and white shirt on (with the number 19 on the back) and the hands of his two children for his presentation. The time had come for everyone. Torres, visibly excited and moved by it all, took to the centre stage to greet the fans who had never given up on him. “How nice it is to come home. Someday I will have to ask what I have done to deserve this.”
The day started much earlier. From early on fans queued outside the gates. The avalanche of fans meant the gates had to be opened earlier to give more access for the thousands who waited outside. Three stands were full and the atmosphere was as it is on a matchday. The crowd waited patiently for their idol and they chanted his name relentlessly.
When Torres addressed the fans he said: “I have long been waiting for this moment. It is a pleasure to return to this stadium in the red and white shirt.” The crowd went mad and interruped him in the middle of his speech. A crowd that he said was the “best in the world”.
He enjoyed the moment. He wore the shirt with the No.19 on his back and kicked autographed balls into the stands. People asked him to kiss the badge and he duly did before leaving the pitch with the Atleti anthem playing on.
