With the mercury in Melbourne touching 35º, the Australian Open has made the decision to schedule Rafa Nadal's third-round match against Dudi Sela as the last encounter during Friday's night session on Rod Laver Arena, following Maria Sharapova's match against Zarina Diyas. Nadal and Sela will not take to the court before 9pm local time (11am CET), a decision taken by the organizing committee as a precaution after Nadal's physical problems in his second round match against Tim Smyczek. Committee chief Craig Tiley told AS: "We could see that Rafa had lost a lot of fluids and his team asked us for the longest time possible for his recovery. We are in permanent contact with players' teams and this decision was good for both parties. Rafa Nadal is one of this tournament and world tennis' major assets and we have to protect him."
"It's better for Rafa to play during the night session because although he has recovered and rested well, playing at night will give him more rest. Everything points to heat stroke, but we are confident that from here until the match everything will be fine. His stomach is perfectly ok now," said Toni Nadal after overseeing his nephew's training session on the covered practice court 4.
