Arsenal manager Arséne Wenger said on Thursday that the club's attempt to sign Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal is "50 percent" done.
"Negotiations with Villarreal are going well. Will we reach an agreement? It's possible. We are talking and moving forward bit by bit," the French tactician said in a press conference prior to Arsenal's FA Cup match against Brighton at the weekend.
Arsenal, who have Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Calum Chambers on the books in the central defensive position, are looking for reinforcements during the winter window. "If a player is good enough then we are prepared to pay for him and if the price is fair then we will pay it," added Wenger.
Paulista, 24, started his career at Vítoria and signed for Villarreal in August 2013 on a five-year contract. Manchester United are also interested in the defender, whose release clause stands at 20 million euros.
