According to Spanish daily La Vanguardia, Gerard Piqué has a debt with the tax man amounting to 2.45 million euros (as well as a fine of 9,000) for arrears relating to the years 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The Barcelona defender has challenged the tax agency's calculations and has imposed a suspension on the authorities' attempt to recoup the amount. As Piqué has denied the arrears, the matter will be settled in court.
Over the past few months, the Spanish tax agency has been tightening its grip on footballers due to the rising umber of cases of irregularities uncovered in the taxation of players' image rights. Both David Villa and Iker Casillas have been investigated and settled their cases by stumping up almost two million euros to the authorities. The most high-profile case is that of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, who paid 53 million euros to the tax agency in 2014 to bring his contributions up to date.
