Schmidt worried about the threat of Mario Mandzukic

Roger Schmidt, the coach of Bayer Leverkusen, spoke at the press conference ahead of Atlético Madrid’s Champions League last-16 clash against the German side.

- Against Augsburg you drew 2-2 after a last-minute goal against you, do you think this will impacto n the team ahead of this match?

The Bundesliga and Champions League are different competitions. In the last two league matches we dropped points, but that is in the past. We have two games in the Champions League that we will go into in the best shape possible. We are now focused on what we do in the Champions League.

- You play attacking football. Do you think you should take caution playing against a side who are experts in defending well and hitting on the counter-attack?

That’s something we face every week. We know that they play more long balls and they look at lot for the second play. But again, we prepare each week to face different opponents. The level in the Champions League is much higher but we can prepare for them.

- Are you afraid of Atlético’s attacking players such as Mandzukic and Griezmann?

The Croatian is a very good and special player. He always gets forward and tries to be the centre of attacks. But we are prepared for that. In the Bundesliga there are very good strikers we face every week. Our goalkeeper is ready to come up against this kind of attack. Against Wolfsburg we already faced a great attack.

- Will you go into the game under more pressure after the recent poor results in the league?

We always have pressure but we are used to these kind of games. We’re one of just 16 teams left in the competition and we want to enjoy the tie. The pressure won’t impact on us.”
