Atlético have conceded five goals in the first ten matches of the second half of the season. Atleti’s defensive strength is what has kept them in this title race when they have failed to score. After the 3-0 against Almería (February 21), Cholo’s men had five games in which they struggled in attack: they failed to score in the Champions League in Germany, as well as at Sevilla and Espanyol and scored just one goal against Valencia and another in the return leg of the Champions League. A stubborn defence has allowed Atleti to continue ticking along. In the first ten matches of the second half of the campaign they have conceded just five goals and scored 18. In the first ten games of the first half of the season they conceded nine and scored 19. Valencia have also conceded just five goals since the second round of matches commenced.
Simeone has always seen it as essential for his side not to concede goals. In this campaign, Atlético have not conceded in 14 games from a total of 29 matches (48.27 of matches). Overall in La Liga with Cholo in charge, Atlético have kept a clean sheet in 64 games out of 127 (at 50.39 per cent). And he has faced Real Madrid, Sevilla and Valencia home and away already this season, teams who score plenty of goals.
Atlético move back to third in La Liga
Atlético yesterday recovered what has been theirs for most of the season: third spot in La Liga. Simeone’s men have 62 points and Valencia, who drew against Villarreal at Mestalla, are on 61. On Saturday Atleti saw off Córdoba and on Tuesday night they welcome Real Sociedad to the Calderón. If they win they will put more pressure on Valencia, who play against Athletic Bilbao in midweek. The Madrid club now have nine matches to try and maintain third place and ensure direct entry into the Champions League for next season.
