Thursday is World Austism Awareness Day and Espanyol want to play their part on two fronts. The first, through the playing squad, and the second, through their facilities. The latter will provide the most striking contribution, with the Power8 Stadium set to turn blue at dusk.
With almost as much visibility as the stadium, support for the campaign also comes from the players and coach, Sergio González, who will pose with blue balloons in support of the Aprenem association, which works for the inclusion of people with autism spectrum disorders. The campaign is called “Connect the Blue”. The choice of that colour as a symbol of autism is to represent trust, security, tranquility, loyalty and sincerity, as well as the colour of the sky and sea.
With these gestures, Espanyol hope to pitch in to the fight to banish the clichés about people with autism as people who are disconnected from reality. The club will also take part in an event to support the cause on April 12 when there will be a run along the Barcelona coast.
