Messi returns to Barça with a sore foot; a doubt for Celta

Early this morning Leo Messi, accompanied by Javier Mascherano, is expected to land in Barcelona. It will be around 8:00 CET and on a private jet, using the first of two free days Luis Enrique granted his international stars. Messi will arrive back into Spain annoyed at not being able to play a single minute of Argentina’s international matches (against El Salvador or Ecuador), although the AFA were able to pocket a sizeable fee from the matches owing to his presence in the squad. Once in Barcelona, the star will undergo medical examinations on his right foot to see the extent of his injury and if he will be able to return to train with his Barça team-mates.

The updates on Messi’s foot injury have progressed through this week. The last time he played a full match was against Real Madrid in the Clásico (2-1). It was the match that followed, against Manchester City in the Champions League, in which Messi suffered his injury. A tackle from Demichelis seemed to be the cause, according to a review by ESPN.

The Barça medical staff will keep track of the player’s progress today and tomorrow. It is expected that he will not be risked for Sunday’s match against Celta Vigo at Balaídos. The lead over Madrid, in second place, is four points but nobody thinks that it won’t go down to the last match of the season. Messi’s performances in La Liga have been key for Barcelona (he was only dropped for the first 45 minutes of the 1-0 loss at Real Sociedad) but Luis Enrique does not want to risk the immediate future of the player with big games coming up.

Today Barcelona should start to solve the mystery of Messi’s right foot. Supposedly there is nothing wrong but it is rare for him to go ten days without being able to play.
