Since 2000, Real Madrid have spent €90.8m on seven right-backs. All of them have arrived at the club over the course of Florentino Pérez’s two spells as president. The first two to arrive were Sergio Ramos (€27m) and Diogo (€6.5m). Both of them signed in the summer of 2005. During the following transfer window Cicinho, who was labelled the ‘new Cafu’, arrived (he had signed in September). Shortly afterwards, Florentino resigned due to the institutional crisis and results.
The club did not sign any more right-backs until Florentino’s return. In 2009, Ramos was the only one of the three who remained at the club. That summer Álvaro Arbeloa re-joined the club from Liverpool. When Ramos moved to the centre of defence, Arbeloa’s absences were covered by ‘false’ full-backs (Lassana Diarra, Michael Essien, Hamit Altintop, Raphael Varane and Raúl Albiol).
Dani Carvajal emerged from the club’s academy, but he had to go to Bayer Leverkusen in search of first-team opportunities in 2012. That year, Fabinho joined on loan from Rio Ave. In 2013, Florentino re-signed Carvajal for €6.5m (he was the best full-back in the Bundesliga) and let go of Fabinho. Now Danilo arrives…
