Moyá is fit again but Oblak has secured the goalkeeper jersey

Oblak has made himself a firm fixture as Atleti’s main goalkeeper. Moyá is almost match-fit but faces an uphill challenge in dislodging the Slovenian stopper from the Atletico starting eleven. Oblak has been playing fantastically well since coming on for the injured Moya during the Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen. He has now gone 367 minutes without conceding in the games against: Leverkusen, Getafe, Córdoba and Real Sociedad. The former Benfica goalkeeper has pulled off some key stops, the penalty save from the Çalhanoglu spot-kick which saw Simeones’s side progress into the last eight of this seasons Champions League. He has also been involved in key interventions in the La Liga games against Córdoba and Real Sociedad.

His poor Champions League debut in Athens against Olympiakos is a distant memory where he was singled out in the 3-2 defeat. It’s a case of history repeating itself for Oblak. Last season at Benfica, he started off as reserve goalkeeper, and only got into the side following an injury to Moraes. Once established in the team he became a keep player in the three titles that the Eagles secured that season. A similar incident occurred at his previous club, Unión de Leiria during the 2011/12 season. He didn’t play a single minute until the 14th round of fixtures and once established in the team was a regular for the remainder of that season. Now he has a golden opportunity to establish himself as the club’s number one goalkeeper and on current form, Moya will have a stern challenge in recovering his position between the posts.
