Marco Reus, who had been under contract until 2017 and was also one of Real Madrid’s intended targets for next season, has renewed his contract with Borussia Dortmund until June 2019, confirmed the German club today.
The German international, who has 70 goals in 169 Bundesliga matches, had a claused in his previous deal which meant he could leave Dortmund for 30 million euros. The circumstances made him a big target in the next transfer market but the player has ended speculation surrounding his future for now. There is no such clause in his new deal.
"Dortmund is my hometown and Borussia is simply my club,” he said after penning his new deal."I look forward to a successful future with our team and our fantastic fans behind us. There is plenty to do and I want to really get stuck in..”
After signing the deal, Hans-Joachim Watzke, Dortmund’s chief executive, said that the player was never influenced by rumours and said he knew he would stay. "We never let ourselves be influenced by all the rumours," he said. "We always saw a good chance that this exceptional player could consciously decide in favour of Dortmund."
Meanwhile, sporting director Michael Zorc said: “Marco Reus could have joined almost any of the world’s top clubs. His decision shows that his heart beats for his home town and his home club. He is a very important cornerstone of Borussia Dortmund’s sporting future.”
