"Those who doubt the passion of Cristiano do not know him"

Luis Figo, former Real Madrid player and candidate for the FIFA presidency, has spoke out against the criticism directed at Cristiano Ronaldo, his fellow countryman. He said that “those who doubt” the “passion for Real” and the “professionalism” of the forward do so because”they completely ignore his history and his character.”

On Saturday, just after the 4-0 defeat suffered at Atlético Madrid, the FIFA Ballon d’Or holder celebrated his 30th birthday with a party that was unveiled on social networks. The hashtag #LaFiestaDeLaDeshonra (The Party of Shame) soon started ‘trending’.

“Anyone who doubts the passion of Cristiano for Real Madrid, and his professionalism, completely ignore his history and his character,” Figo said on Tuesday. The former Madrid man shared a dressing room with Ronaldo with the Portuguese national side.

The former Madrid and Barcelona player, who retired at the end of the 2008-09 season with Inter Milan, is looking to become the president of FIFA when elections take place in May. He will go up against Joseph Blatter, the current president, Michael van Praag and Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein.
