José Luis Gayà monopolised the glances at Valencia’s training session on Thursday. The left-back has become a priority objective for Real Madrid – the club have intensified their efforts as they know the time to sign him is now, before he renews his deal with Valencia, or else they will have to look for another player.
At Valencia they are confident that he will extend his contract. If he does so he will he will fulfil the desire of Peter Lim, who regards Gayà as a cornerstone of his project.
Florentino Pérez told Amadeo Salvo that he would not go for Gayà if the player had renewed his deal. However, differences in various terms (mainly the buyout clause valuation) have emerged in the negotiations between the full-back and Valencia and Real Madrid have spotted a gap in which to sneak in to.
The European champions are willing to fork out the €18m that is stated in his current release clause, but no more. If the player renews his contract, Madrid would definitely rule out signing him. Toldrá Consulting, the agency that represents the player, already knows this firsthand.
Madrid’s interest means Valencia are keen to accelerate Gayà’s contract renewal and nip the matter in the bud. What has not changed is their stance on the player’s future. The player is under contract until 2017 and Valencia are not going to listen to any offers for him. They will not even enter into a negotiation if he does not renew his deal.
Valencia would only let Gayà go if he informs them that he wants to leave the Mestalla and another club meets his €18m buyout clause fee. But that premise has not yet occured, nor are they contemplating it at the club. At Valencia they believe there is a “predisposition” on Gayà’s part to continue, hence the existence of an “open” negotiation.
Obviously, the interest of third parties could alter the conditions, although, with the arrival of Lim, there is room for manoeuvre with regards to the club’s economic condition. There is no need to sell the pillars of the team. And Gayà is one of those, as was Nicolás Otamendi in January when Manchester United were told “no”.
