David Moyes looked ahead to Monday’s meeting Elche and hopes his team can correct the issues which saw his side held at home by Deportivo last week. The Scot insisted in this afternoon’s press conference that there is no lacking in motivation within the squad.
“I don’t think our problems against Depor had anything to do motivation – the main problems have been football-related and perhaps fatigue as well. But it could also have been something to do with expectation,” Moyes explained. “The expectation on the players has risen since the start of the season and we were expecting to beat Deportivo and sometimes when you are expected to beat teams it doesn’t work. We need to show that, in the games we should win, we can win. Overall we didn’t play well last week; I don’t think it had anything to do with motivation”.
Moyes has a few players who are not fit for Monday’s late game at the Martínez Valero.“Alfred [Finbogasson]’s not fit for the game, Iñigo’s not available and Rubén Pardo picked up a minor injury in training he was able to train today,” the coach said. “Carlos Vela is training much better but he’s not fully ready yet to complete the full 90 minutes. So we have a few players who will not be available for this match but I hope that Rubén Pardo and Carlos Vela are able to play a part against Elche”.
The Scot has now completed his first half season in charge, and gave his own appraisal of the team’s development during his time in San Sebastián. “I think the team’s evolution has been what we might have expected. Remember we have signed no players – it’s the same squad as at the start of the season although the team has progressed. I can’t talk about what the team was like right at the start of the campaign but since I started, I think there has been some improvement; the team’s passing the ball better, we’re now attacking better, we’ve been strong defensively... we’d like to be faster. But we’ve not changed anything because we haven’t brought any new players in but we will hopefully be signing new players to turn us into a side which can compete in the top part of the table”.
