Paco Alcácer: “Composure is key against Barcelona”

—How do you beat Barça at the Camp Nou? You manged to beat them last year.

—By playing as a tight unit and not losing control of the situation at any point. They’ll have the bulk of the possession and will create plenty of scoring chances, what we need to do is take full advantage of the few chances that come our way. Last season we started off losing 1-0 and look how it ended.

—On the day of your contract renewal you said that your goal at the Camp Nou alongside the strikes against FC Basel were the best memories of your career.

—Correct, when a young striker plays at the Camp Nou and also scores...it’s a great feeling. It’s a memory that will stay with me for a long time.

—You’ve scored three goals in the last five matches.

—I’m feeling good now, that’s for sure. I’ve started scoring again that’s important. I’m in good form and so is Álvaro, who scored in the last game and is in fine form too.

—Now you mention his name, it surprises me how well you both get along, fully knowing that Nuno is just going to play with one striker.

—Weill, it’s unusual for two strikers to get on so well as there is always competition. In our case, despite competing to be main striker for the team we actually get along well. I can assure you that when I score Álvaro is delighted and vice versa.

—Where does the danger from Barcelona come from?

—Logically, we need to be wary of their front line. Along with the three Real Madrid forwards they both have the best attackers in the world and we need to be on our toes. But, defensive work starts with the forwards irrespective if it’s myself or Álvaro playing.

—What is the secret of this Valencia team? It’s the youngest squad in La Liga.

—I feel that apart from being young, it’s the ambition we have. We’re aware of the team we are. We’ve come together as a family and are moving collectively in the same direction. This Valencia side deserves to be in the Champions League and am sure it’s something that we’ll secure.

—Is today’s game an opportunity to generate profile for a return to the national team?

—It’s another game. I’ll only get back in the national team if my performances for Valencia are up to scratch.
