Cristiano faces Serbia as Portugal look to take top spot

Pepe has been ruled out of Portugal’s upcoming European qualifier against Serbia (20:45 CET). Portugal coach Fernando Santos announced that the Real Madrid defender pulled out at the last minute, despite training with the rest of the squad this week. One sure-fire inclusion, however, is Cristiano Ronaldo, who will lead his national side as they look to take control of the group to qualify for Euro 2016 in France.

Fernando Santos’s men currently sit in second place. They have six points from three games, one point behind leaders Denmark, who have a game in hand.

As per usual, Portugal's hopes lie with Cristiano, who is using the international break to get a change of scene and take stock before the business end of the season commences. One thing that hasn’t changed is the recently imposed silent treatment with the media – the Portuguese striker has said he will not speak to the press until the end of the season. Elsewhere, Real Madrid full-back Coentrao is likely to start on the bench.
