In Amsterdam on Saturday, two Atlético emissaries met with Ahmet Bulut, the representative of Arda Turan and Ozan Tufan, the Turkish starlet that the Spanish champions are considering signing. The meeting was arranged several days ago and it was a further step toward recruiting the footballer who has been a revelation in his home country. Atleti have followed him for some time. It was the second act of contact that has taken place between the two parties; the first took place last month. Bulut is acting as intermediary for Tufan’s club Bursaspor, where the player is under contract until 2018.
The meeting was fairly positive, and this was transmitted by Bulut to Mehmet Tufan, the player’s father. At the Amsterdam Arena on Sunday there were scouts from Atlético Madrid, as well as those from Liverpool and Juventus, to watch Tufan. However, Bulut informed them that the player is seduced by the idea of playing in Spain for several reasons.
Firstly, he is enticed by the presence of Arda, which is something that would facilitate his adaptation. Secondly, Atlético are currently a giant of European football and a club which recently consolidated its long-term project by tying down coach Diego Simeone until 2020. And thirdly, the versatile midfielder (who often plays as a right-back or as a left-back) feels his style is best-suited to Spanish football.
Despite the interest of the four big teams in his country (Galatasaray, Besiktas, Trabzonspor and Fenerbahçe), Tufan wants to leave Turkey. Bulut informed Atlético that Bursaspor have initially demanded €10m for the youngster.
Strategy. A while back Atlético’s sports management team began a strategy that has lead the Madrid club to incorporate several very promising young recruits from all over the world. This policy has lead to the arrivals of José María Giménez, Ángel Correa, Jan Oblak and Emiliano Velázquez. The club closely follows international competitions at Under-20 and Under-21 levels.
He played all of the match against Holland.
On Saturday, Ozan Tufan played his tenth match as a full senior international. He played the full 90 minutes of the match against Holland at the Amsterdam Arena and he did so as a pivot, his natural position. Fatih Terim handed him his debut and on previous occasions deployed him as a right-back. Tufan had a good match – he handled the ball well, he was precise with his passing and he controlled the play, especially in the first half. Turkey were on the verge of springing a surprise in Holland, but Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored in injury-time to cancel out Burak Yilmaz’s first-half opener. The Atlético scouts were satisfied because they saw Tufan shine in a top-level match.
