Iker Casillas made a pact with club president Florentino Pérez to leave on a free transfer this summer, but the club captain is yet to make a decision on his continuity at Real Madrid. His future depends on the thoughts and feelings he will have in the coming weeks and the development of events at both sporting and institututional levels.
To begin with, the most recent meeting that took place between the player and the club occurred after he lifted the Décima. The player and his representative, Carlos Cutropía, sat down with the club president to discuss his situation after what had occurred during the Mourinho era, when the figure of Casillas was worn down. That meeting took place 11 months ago. The Real Madrid captain is under contract until 2017. Under that deal, his annual salary decreases each year. This year he will earn €8m euros; that amount will be lowered to €7.5m in 2015-16 and €7m in 2016-17.
The club want Casillas to make the first move and renounce the final two years of his contract, but the 33-year-old is mulling over whether to stay on or not. He is analysing the pros and cons. He knows that his figure is worn-down among some sectors of the Bernabéu. He is tired of the whistles and the insults he has received. In addition, the interest in David de Gea and Petr Cech seemingly questions his continuity.
But, on the other hand, he does not understand why he has no right to end his career by fulfilling the remainder of his contract. He is 30 matches away from equalling Raúl at the top of the club’s list of all-time appearance-makers (741). It his part of his dream to write the history of the club in which he has spent the past 16 seasons.
His stance, at the moment, is to copy the presidential speech. Not even the coach has secured his position for the 2015-16 season, but Madrid have signed five players and are looking for a goalkeeper. Casillas, meanwhile, meditates in solitude…
