Sami Khedira will turn 28 on Saturday, with his mind away from Real Madrid. The German midfielder announced while on international duty recently that he is set for a change of scene when his contract expires in June.
“It is not a decision against the club. I want to find new stimulation for my career and to continue growing,” he said.
His future seems to be tied to the Bundesliga club Schalke, although the midfielder has stated that he has not yet signed terms with any club (in England he has been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea). That concern over his future has affected his performances. This season he has managed only 624 minutes of action, and he has lost 20 matches to injury (he has not participated in 28 of Madrid’s 45 matches).
The most striking absence was his last one. He missed four Madrid training sessions and the Clásico defeat at Barcelona with gastroenteritis. But just two days after Barça-Madrid, he found himself working under the orders of German national team coach Joachim Löw, with total normality. He made a miraculous recovery and was able to play 62 minutes of Germany’s 2-2 draw with Australia (he provided an assist). There was no sign of weakness after his bout of gastroenteritis…
The gastroenteritis was not the German’s only snub this season. At the start of the season he was left out of the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup final against Atlético Madrid and he opted to head to his country (without permission from the club) to watch a German second-tier match, in which his brother Rani played, instead of supporting his team at the Calderón…
